There are many, fancy variations on this basic recipe. This easy recipe works with many types of bread – white, whole wheat, brioche, cinnamon-raisin, Italian, or French. Serve hot with butter or margarine and maple syrup.


  • milk : 0.66667 cup
  • eggs : 2 piece
  • vanilla extract (Optional) : 1 tsp
  • ground cinnamon (Optional) : 0.25 tsp
  • salt to taste : 0 piece
  • bread : 6 thick slices
  • unsalted butter, or more as needed : 1 Tbsp

Stages of cooking

  1. Whisk milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt together in a shallow bowl.
  2. Lightly butter a griddle and heat over medium-high heat.
  3. Dunk bread in the egg mixture, soaking both sides. Transfer to the hot skillet and cook until golden, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Serve hot. Dotdash Meredith Food Studios
