If you are a fan of Mexican dishes, then corn tortillas, salt and oil can always be found in your house. Use these ingredients to cook delicious, crunchy and healthy homemade tortilla chips. There are three major ways to cook these chips. The classic way is to fry them. The second option implies baking the chips in the oven and the third one is cooking them in the microwave oven. Let’s learn these three cooking methods below!
- canola oil : 1 cup (you can use more or less depending on how many chips you are making)
- corn tortillas : 12 piece
- kosher salt : 1 tsp (to your taste)
Stages of cooking
To cook fried tortilla chips, dry them in the oven first to make them a bit crispy. Lay them on the bottom of the baking pan and bake at 180 C (350 F) for about 5 minutes or at 90 C (200 F) for about 10 minutes.
Cut each tortilla into six triangle-shaped pieces.
Pour oil into a pot, heat it on medium fire and deep fry tortilla chips for about 2 minutes until they become golden and firm. You should put the chips in one layer and fry as many portions as you need. Make sure the oil is not too hot!
Spoon the chips onto a paper towel to get rid of extra oil.
To cook baked tortilla chips, pre-heat the oven to 180 C (350°F) and cut the tortillas into triangle-shaped pieces.
Spread the tortilla pieces on the bottom of a baking pan in one layer. Bake in the oven for about 6 minutes. Use tongs to turn them over. Sprinkle with salt and keep baking for 6-9 minutes more, until they begin to color. Remove the chips from the oven and let them cool down a bit. Sprinkle with more salt before serving.
If you wish to cook tortilla chips in a microwave oven, cut them into triangle-shaped pieces. Line your microwave oven with a paper towel and spread the tortilla pieces on them in a single layer. Microwave until they become crispy. The time will vary depending on the strength of your microwave and how many tortillas you are going to cook. If your microwave oven is powerful, then it should take less than one minute to cook the chips. Anyway, check them before taking away. Sprinkle with salt to serve. Tortilla chips taste great with guacamole! Enjoy!
